Four killed in winter season initiations

Four initiates have died at winter season initiation schools.
One died as a result of complications following circumcision in Gauteng.
Circumstances surrounding the deaths of three Mpumalanga initiates have not yet been confirmed.
More than 23,000 initiates have been enrolled at various schools in the Western Cape.
The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs says bogus traditional surgeons and a lack of medical pre-screening are some concerns.
At the same time, surgeons at Stellenbosch University’s Medical Faculty and Tygerberg Hospital performed a penile transplant for the second time, giving hope to initiates who have had penises amputated.
Medicine Faculty Urology Head, Professor Andre van der Merwe, has urged government’s support for the procedure to be rolled out in the public healthcare sector.
“We’re trying to create solutions for our own problems, so it has quite a big international impact but it wasn’t our primary aim.”
Between December and January, forty initiate deaths were recorded.
It’s unclear how many of those deaths were related to botched circumcisions.
