Top cop Piet Byleveld succumbs to cancer

Former top cop Piet Byleveld has died at the age of 67 after succumbing to cancer at the Life Wilgeheuwel clinic.
It is believed that he was surrounded by his closest family at the time of his passing.
To South Africa and abroad, he was known as a top detective.

"To us he was more; he was the best husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He will be dearly missed. Right now, life without him is unimaginable and his space will be empty," the family said in a statement.

The family also thanked the doctors at the clinic for their support and help as well as the public for their well wishes.
"Please know that your love and admiration gave Piet strength right to the end."

The family would wish for space and time to mourn prior to the funeral.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course and are unknown at this stage.
